Following his graduation for college, Trump went home immediately and began working with his father and his company Elizabeth Trump and Son. Their business primarily focused on middle class rental housing in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. One of Trump’s first projects was the revitalization of the foreclosed Swifton Village apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio, which his father had purchased for $5.7 million in 1962. Trump became intimately involved in the project, personally flying in for a few days at a time to carry out landscaping and other low-level tasks. After $500,000 investment, Trump successfully turned a 1200-unit complex with a 66 percent vacancy rate to 100 percent occupancy within two years.
Trumps success certainly would not be his last. In 1971 Trump moved to Manhattan, where he became convinced of the economic opportunity in the city, specifically large building projects in Manhattan that would offer opportunities for earning high profits and utilizing attractive architectural design. Trump began by landing the rights to develop the old Penn Central yards on the West Side, then turned the bankrupt Commodore Hotel into a new Grand Hyatt and created The Trump Organization. Trumps innovative ideas earned him 60 million dollars in revenue after a few years and from that point on he added multiple projects to his schedule. With each new project he added his own flair and style which allowed him to demand top dollars prices for his services.
As I mentioned before, I never knew what Donald Trump did to earn his millions and I’m sure I’m not the only one. This was just a glimpse in the life of a billionaire. Donald Trump has seen many successes and many failures, but through it all he remained strong and determined to reach his goal. His story is inspirational and should be studied by our youth to let them know you can reach your dreams. One thing Trump stated in one of his books was that the key to success was to stay passionate about what you are doing. He stated that if you are in love with your business then it will never get old and you will always want to see it flourish. This is key to being successful and I plan to use this tip throughout my career.
When you hear the name Donald, who do you think about? Donald Duck, Donald Driver? I personally think of Donald Trump. Why is his name the first to come to my mind though. Could it be because I love watching the Celebrity Apprentice and I get to hear him say his favorite line. “You’re Fired.” Or is there a deeper reason. Is it because he is one of the wealthiest men in the world? Maybe, but how did he get to all his riches? I know the name Donald Trump but I have no clue what he actually does or how he got to that point. Lets explore shall we.
Donald Trump is the son of Fred and Mary Trump. He was one of five of their children. Trump attended the Kew-Forest School and had some difficulties while there. He spent a lot of his time terrorizing his teachers and not getting good marks in his classes. His parents decided the best course of action for him would be to attend the New York Military Academy to hopefully point his life in the right direction. Which in hindsight might have been the best decisions they made for their son. Trump ended up on the right path and graduated from high school with honors and began attending college.
He enrolled at Fordham University and studied there for two years before transferring to Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. There he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. Trump actually thought about attending film school but decided business would be the better choice of occupation. I wonder if he would have been better going the film route. The world will never know.
Gates soon graduated from high school and attended Harvard. His sophomore year he was highlighted in the schools newspaper for devising algorithms that had never been seen before. His success shocked not only his professors, but almost everyone he encountered at the university. Gates never had a plan when entering Harvard. He spent most of his time locked away in his room or in the university’s computer lab. One year while in college he saw the release of the latest computer and decided at that moment he wanted to join the competition for the best computer software. He and his long time friend Paul Allen decided to form their own corporation. His parents were a little upset initially but after he explained his passion for entrepreneurship they began to support his decision.
From that point on, Gates scheming to get to the top began and he was great at being sneaky. He started putting his name out to other corporations, letting them know what he could do for some of their products to gauge their interests and see what they would be looking for in a super computer. After he found out what he needed to know from his competition he and Allen began working to accomplish their goals. Gates soon partnered with IBM to help write programs for their upcoming personal computer. In 1985 Microsoft launched its first retail version of Microsoft Windows with the help of IBM and with that successfully developed the first version of an innovative system.
Gates passion for excellence drove him to accomplish his goals. Gates went from being a college student who loved being on computers, to writing his own programs and making millions. His goals and accomplishments have driven the technology industry for years and I know he won’t stop. The Windows operating system can be found on more computers today than any other operating system and it all started with a dream of one man, Bill Gates
Imagine the wealthiest people in the world. This man’s name would surely be on your list. Bill Gates is a computer programmer who has helped change the way we look at personal computers. Today in any business setting, you can’t walk through and not see a piece of technology that he has impacted in some shape or fashion. Gates is one of the best known entrepreneurs of the computer revolution and has been criticized for many of his tactics. His story may have a happy ending but it did not stop him from having to go through some hardships of his own.
Bill Gates was born in Seattle Washington to William and Mary Gates. His parents were of English and German decent. His father being a prominent lawyer had aspirations of young Bill following in his footsteps and was not too happy with Gates’ choice to not do so. At the age of thirteen, Gates attended an exclusive preparatory school. When he was in the eighth grade, the Mothers Club at the school used proceeds from Lakeside School’s rummage sale to buy a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and a block of computer time on a General Electric (GE) computer for the school’s students. Gates took an interest in programming the GE system in BASIC, and was excused from math classes to pursue his interest. He wrote his first computer program on this machine: an implementation of tic-tac-toe that allowed users to play games against the computer. This was a revolutionary thing for a young boy to accomplish and his schools directors definitely took notice to his particular skill set.
After the clubs proceeds were exhausted, Gates and other students began fighting for time with the technology, so they created bugs in which gave them basic control over the operating systems. Only these students knew how to eliminate the bugs, but they were caught and banned from the computer center. This did not deter Gates though. He use this ban as a way to show his skill set and in turn he was offered a job as a technician who found bugs in the software. His abilities soon landed him in programming situations he never thought he would have. Gates took full advantage of every opportunity given to him, impressing multiple people along the way.
Returning home after the loss of her child, Oprah began going to high school. Due to her high marks in her schooling, she was transferred to an affluent suburban high school in which she was teased daily for the poverty she displayed. In order to eliminate this image of her, Winfrey began stealing money and lying to her mother. Her mother, upset about the lying and stealing, sent Oprah away once more to live with Vernon, but this time did not take her back in. Vernon was strict and made Winfrey focus on school. Oprah soon started to excel in her studies and became an honors student while maintaining her popular status. She later joined her high school’s speech team where she participated and won an oratory contest which awarded her the opportunity to attend Tennessee State College where she studied communication.
At the age of seventeen, Winfrey began working at a local radio station where she reported the news part time. She then began to use her voice to reach others on other communication mediums. Oprah continued to work in local media being the first black news anchor on a popular network in Nashville and then moving to Baltimore later to co-anchor the news full time. This helped spawn her career as a television host and in 1983, her show AM Chicago aired. She took this show to the next level bringing in a whole new audience and improving rating dramatically. The show was then renamed to the Oprah Winfrey Show and the rest is history.
Oprah’s life was full of trials and tribulations, but this did not stop her from reaching her goals. Most people in her situation would have simply given up, but her perseverance to continue fighting and continue pushing has made her who she is today. I couldn’t imagine trying to live the life Oprah has and I have an new found respect for her and the things she does with her success. Hopefully her story will inspire others to keep going and never give up hope.
As one of the elite in our society, Oprah has single handily stood the test of time. Her talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, lasted 25 + years on the same network and made her one of the greatest talk show hosts of all time. Not only did she have that underneath her belt, but she also participated in numerous movie roles which only increased her brand popularity. Oprah has done many things in her life, but everything hasn’t been rosy and sweet her whole life. She had to combat many different things during her career including image and other ethnicity issues.
Oprah was born Oprah Gail Winfrey on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. try saying that three times fast. Her mother Vernita Lee was a single parent and struggled to take care of Oprah during her younger years. Oprah’s family was poor. So poor in fact that she sometimes wore potato sacks as clothing because they could not afford any other clothing. At age six, Oprah and her mother moved to Milwaukee for better paying maid service jobs. After a while Oprah’s mother gave birth to another daughter and sent Oprah to live with a man named Vernon Winfrey, who was claimed to be the biological father of Oprah, because she could not support both of her daughters. Oprah stayed with her biological father for a few years and during this time her mother had given birth to two more children a boy and a girl.
As an adolescent, Oprah said she was molested multiple times by her own relatives, a cousin, uncle, and family friend. According to Winfrey, the molestation began when she was just nine years old and carried on for a while. Oprah didn’t initially tell anyone of her abuse, but when she finally did muster up the courage to do so, her family refused to believe it. they said she was making the stories up and had no proof. At the age of thirteen and after suffering from her abuse, Winfrey ran away from home and became pregnant at the age of fourteen. Her infant son died soon after birth, which may have been a blessing in disguise for the young teen.
Jobs was drawn to technology, like a fly to a picnic. He wasn’t the only one with this irresistible passion for the technological world. A man named Steve Wozniak that he met in his Homebrew Computer Club also shared his passion and they became great friends. Jobs and Wozniak collaborated on a couple different projects and their negotiations stated they would split revenue 50/50. Little did Wozniak know, Jobs was actually keeping most of the money and giving him a smaller piece of the pie. Eventually the two decided to cut out the middle man and create their own corporation to bring in more profit. In 1976 the Apple Computer Company was formed and run by the two technology gurus.
At this point in Jobs career, he noticed the large and bulky size of the current computer devices on the market. His plan was to change that with innovative technology and he did just that, with Wozniak by his side. From there, they created the Apple Computers and their company’s net worth grew to over 200 million dollars. This was one of the most phenomenal cases of corporate growth in U.S. history. Jobs and Wozniak had opened an entirely new market, personal computers. Personal computers began an entirely new way of processing information. With Job’s company trying to stay above the competition, there were a few products introduced that flopped tremendously. The board of directors at the company felt this was a direct reflection of the direction Jobs was heading and decided to part ways with the technology genius. Jobs once again did not let this deter him from his goal and started another company called NeXT. This company also produced personal computers and initially the response behind the new corporation was good. Although they had many followers, Jobs’ new company could not compete with the original product he created. Jobs was still a creative master mind and with his new product had created new technology that the Apple Company did not have. They wanted this technology and bought Jobs’ NeXT Corporation. Jobs returned to Apple as a part-time consultant to the chief executive officer and eventually made his way back up to permanent CEO of Apple.
Jobs was determined to not let the hardships deter him from his dreams. In a magazine article, Jobs said, “The thing that drives me and my colleagues … is that you see something very compelling to you, and you don’t quite know how to get it, but you know, sometimes intuitively, it’s within your grasp. And it’s worth putting in years of your life to make it come into existence.”
His story is very inspirational to those that are pursuing a dream and hopefully we will see those dreams come to pass just as we did with Jobs.
